Why did you start a community?

Why did you start your community?

For me, I decided to start forum communities in 2002. I started with a tech website that went flunk due to the amount of tech sites that sprung up in 2002. I then started a mens website/forum, almost like Maxim/Stuff. That also went flunk. I then looked for another interest of mine that there were not a lot of sites of and decided on Sex. been running my site for three years now.

I started communites because I love forums, interacting with people and giving and receiving help.

Why no one has replied to this yet. I’ll start.

I fell into mine purely by accident. Another small board shut down and I started my own. I am the only one right now and thought it would work well, so far so good.

My forum career started when I was leading a gaming clan - Unreal Tournament. This was 4-5 years ago. I had a few small clan forums here and there, eventually became an admin of gaming communities for our game and type (where I met LarryB)...left for a little while, started up another, more generalized gaming community (with LarryB), left that, and here I am. The reason I started AdminFusion was that I was bored and facing forum withdrawal...was trying to think of a subject to work on, couldn't come up with one, so I decided why not do forums for forum owners? I knew of one other forum like it at the time and saw some weaknesses there...thought I'd capitalize on those, so I'm doing my best to do that.

So far, so good - I enjoy it

I started a video game modding site for Stargate: The Alliance last year because no one else had done it yet and I thought I could do it better than anyone else. Apparently I was wrong because it died a few months later of no activity and my competitors lived on.

I've been my family's PC tech for quite some time. I also work as a PC Technician at my job and I have done so for many years. A couple of years ago I thought what a better way to answer tough PC questions than to do so on a forum. It would be much easier than trying to respond to countless e-mails I used to get from family and friends. Even though there are many PC tech sites out there, I still wanted one of my own. Plus I always felt that some sites get too big and you lose the community feel in them real quick.

Even though my site started due to my family and friends contacting me for support, none of them have registered. Most don't even know what forums are and don't feel comfortable with something like that. I still enjoy working on my forums though and now more than ever their e-mails don't get replied to as quickly.

I launched my forum because the forum I was currently a member of was circling the drain fast as the main admin had lost interest and the community needed a new place to call home.

The other forum literally vanished without a word a few months later.

It's funny how many of us started our current forums because we were once members of another like it and it either went down the drain or we just didn't like it...

What's the saying? "If you want something done right, do it yourself." Some of us have succeeded in that too... Ryan!

It's interesting to read the stories behind other forums because this information is usually missing when you see a forum. As for us, we created a website for people who speak English as a second language. We started with short multiple grammar and vocabulary tests and soon realized that it would make sense to add a forum too. We then linked every single test question to our forum, this means, when a user answers one of our 4500+ questions they can also post a message directly to the forum.
Now the forum is growing every day and we have lots of plans with our community.
