Is it smart to do this?

Hey guys.
Quick question. Is is smart to register on some of the big boards that are related to my subject, post and make some friends and then invite them over to the site or have a link in my sig, etc.? Or is it better to find other ways of acquiring members?

Just curious. I appreciate some advice!
Thank you,
Caitlyn

Definitely use links in your signature. Post helpful comments and people will click your signature links . I wouldn't go around PMing people though... but that's just me.

alot of admins frown on PMs and stuff like that. start off good with other admins as you will create friends and people will know your site because of your reputation.

the name of the .com would be good but read t he rules on linking. some dont allow it.

Is it good to register at big-boards similar to yours with a link in your signature? Most definitely, yes - BUT ONLY if it is not against their guidelines...many forums do not want their competitors promoting in their own forums.

As far as making friends and inviting them over to your forums - no, don't do this. I'd say that the majority of people consider this unethical. Think about it...would you want your competitors doing that in your forums?

No, I meant invited them through another form of communication, such as AIM or MSN. The only reason I am thinking this idea is useless is because while I'm posting on the other forum to get my sig out there, I am creating content for the competitor when I could be posting on my own site and making content for myself. So will I make up for the lost posting time in the amount of users I will gain from my sig's link or will it just be a waste?

It will not be a waste. What you are getting through your signature links is not something you can get in your forums - new members. That doesn't mean ignore your own forums though, you definitely need to be creating content there.

About inviting friends...even if it's via an instant messenger, I wouldn't recommend doing it. They will find your forums on their own, don't risk becoming the "shady member thief" by asking them to come look at your forums.

Supposedly, using links in your signature at big-boards give you ton of traffic and hits, though I've yet to see this. Whenever I tried, it seems that all the big boards relating to my topic don't have signatures enabled - for this very purpose?

Do not PM members on their board though - this will get you a ban almost anywhere and everywhere.

I would agree, if you can put a link in your sig do that and have soemthing that catch's the eye. By posting helpful information instead of one liners. As people see you around, they will be corious about you and yoru site and will want to learn more about you.

I agree too and I have spoken to other webmasters about it they seem to agree. I would try and add some value before adding your URL in your sig
