Just to add some further thought...

I've found that by working hard to ensure that your 'Lounge / Pub' sections have plenty of interesting discussion that people can get involved in the better.

Having an active lounge / pub builds a real community around the site as people stop considering the site as 'somewhere i can only go to address this single need'. Rather they come on more regularly to see who's hanging out and chatting about interesting things.

Naturally this has a trickle down effect to all other parts of your community as your members will naturally check out the rest of the forum while they are there.

I agree to it that there must be content before a forum can start having real activity.

But in my case (I am thinking of starting a RPG forum) I am in a fix. I mean, how would I create such content where the focus of the forum is to do Roleplaying.

Ofcourse, I can think of few things that I can put there as admin/Game Master other than the Rules, Policies and such things - Realm notes. I can create posts pertaining to description of the realm, that is, planetary systems, calendar, geography, brief history, flora and fauna, and such things.

But how do I create activity? Do I roleplay myself using another account, and also moderate it with my Game Master account?

Content will help, yes...but it is not required to start your forums. Not all forums will be able to do this, and not all forums should do this. You'll be just fine starting without any content

Just to highlight that the forums that i tend to frequent not only have content, but have unique content. There are blogs that use posts from other sites like yahoo answers and this just does not impress me. Especially when it is my own post in yahoo answers that i come across on a forum as posted by warrior. Who on earth is warrior.

Anyway there are forums that the content is generated by the admin and because this content is useful and unique, you feel compelled to participate in the discussion with your own unique contributions.
It's a win-win situation
