Site + Forums or just Forums?

Currently Im running a few sites with forums as sort of an added on thing. I remember one site named icrontic.com, which is now gone, that used to be a news/reviews site that changed over to just using the forums to do everything.

Has anyone here done both and which one worked better for you?

Instead of having a site with a CMS system + Forums, with the way most forum software is today, it seems to make sense just to use the forum software to do everything.

PS: Im thinking of taking my "FragWare" site and making it just a forum site, and doing news and reviews right in the forums, instead of having them sort of be behind the scenes.

In all of my experiences, I have made a site and then a forum which is part of that site, but I'm not sure if it's really worth it.

I think having a site seperate from your forum is the way to go. I find that incoming links to non-forum pages pays the most from contextual ads.

I would have a site that give a brief introduction to the forum, and a link to it, if i knew how.

If you are using IPB or phpBB - you could use something like the IPB SDK or phpBB Fetch All and make your own cms. A site I coded when I was bored had a blog feature that generated the 'blogs' from posts in a specified forum, and the comments where of course replies on that topic - when you get the hang of the IPB SDK it's really easy.
