Moderators... what do you require of them??

Howdy!

I've started my first forum and now I'm about to advance a member to act as my first Mod! I'd really appreciate some feedback from those more experienced on just what to expect from them. I'm interested in what specific duties you require of them.

Thanks!

Lyte

You might want to glance through a few mod manuals such as this one I posted: link

That will give you a general idea of the dividing line between administrator and moderator, and you can fudge the lines from there.

For me, a good mod is a GREAT member. Loyal, active, helpful, already brimming with ideas on how to keep interest in the subject matter active and people talking. I look for people who are passionate about the forum, not just people who who want power.

I expect my mods to facilitate conversation. We have a daily thread in our offtopic forum, where everyone throws their 'good morning's, goodafternoon's, and goodnight's and checkin through out the day... just daily chat filled ith things that don't really need their own thread. I expect to see my mods in there at least a few times a day, looking especially for people who don't post a lot.

In addition I expect the mods to use their powers to keep their sections clean and easy to navigate. Delete/merge/move/ close as needed, move older threads to archive, general goodhousekeeping.

I don't expect my mods to be the bad guy-- they have no ban powers. But I do expect them to recognize a situation that needs to be addressed and move up the chain to someone who can handle it. I expect my mods to keep an eye out for the admins who are often too busy with high level tasks to see everything that happens on the board.

Are you planning to just have one supermod or will you institute a mod for each forum?

I firstly get moderators for each forum section based on their expertise for that forum section (i.e. SEO Expert for an SEO section), then I usually let them know what functions they are able to perform such as move/delete and handling spam/irrelevant threads etc, ensuring threads stay on topic, getting their individual forum sections moving with new content, etc.

Here you go...this is what is given to ours here at AF as far as requirements

--------------

Guidelines as a Moderator
  • Conduct - Your job as an AdminFusion moderator is to keep the forums both organized and enjoyable for the entire community. To do so, all actions involving the community, whether in public, private, or outside of AF, must be of the highest stature. If you have a problem with a certain member which you cannot handle yourself, notify an administrator.
  • Confidentiality - Anything that is said in this forum (Mod Hideout) stays in this forum, unless otherwise specified by an administrator. If you are found to be releasing any sensitive material from Mod Hideout, your moderator privileges will be revoked and you will be eiligible for suspension or banning from AdminFusion.
  • Active Participation - As a moderator, your main role is to visit the forums regularly and actively participate in discussion. We have no formal guidelines laid out regarding activity requirements, but use the following as a general guideline.
    • Each moderator must visit the forums, on average, once a day for 30 minutes per day. This is an absolute minimum. If you do not visit this often, you cannot possibly perform your job to the fullest. There will be exceptions of course, afterall, we do realize schedules are unpredictable and people take time off (ie: vacations). Although, if we notice an increasing pattern of inactivity, your status as a moderator will be reviewed and either placed on probation or revoked.
    • In addition to time spent on the forums, we expect each moderator to post actively. There is no minimum of posts per day, but you will need to post more than the average user.
    • If you plan to take a hiatus for an extended period of time, be sure to let us know beforehand.
--------------

That's the most of what you are looking for...we also touch on a few other requirements of moderators elsewhere in our "moderator manual" such as knowing the rules, procedure, who to contact, etc.
