Setting up private forum are for staff only...

Hey y'all,

How do I set up a private area/forum that no one can see but staff??

I know there's a feature that allows for a forum that you can only access if you know that URL... but that's not the one I mean. I think there's a different way.

Please advise!

Thanks!

Lyte

I can be done, but the way it's done is different depending on your forum software.

Although MyBB and vB are the same or very similar.

You create the forum and you set the permissions to only allow Admins, Super Mods, and Mods.

MyBB has Quick Permissions when creating the forum, and I'm not sure if vB does but after you create the forum all you need to do is set the permissions right after you create it.

Yep. I 'deny all' and then only set permissions for admins. My members can't even see that there is a staff forum.

Many thanks!

Now... I've set the member as a Moderator and there are some "powers" I'd like them to have but not others. It seems like Moderators get just a little power over threads/posts and Super Mods get dang near ALL the powers. There's nothing in between.

For example... I'd like my Mods to be able close or move offending threads but not be able to delete them. Is that possible? If so, how do I go about setting that up?

Thanks!

Again, it depends on the type of board but you should be able to change their powers using the Forum Moderators portion of the Forum Manager

Example:

Forum A has Mod A

After you set Forum A to Mod A, you should be prompted with a screen asking what powers they can have.

Now, I haven't used vB in a long time so this'll mainly take some investigating of your own to figure out.

Hope I helped.

Unless I missed it... in the Usergroup Manager it doesn't break down into individual "powers." You have Mods and Super Mods. I believe Super Mods get ALL the editing powers within the forum and I don't want anyone be ME being able to delete stuff.

Am I missing something??

Thanks!

I think you have vb 3.5.3.

Did you know you could create your own groups, and not settle for the default ones? (admin, super mod, mod, member, banned)

Yeah, but I didn't see where I could select each and every, individual power. I'll look again! You know 'bout me and snakes! lol

When you add a moderator to a forum, it will allow to choose what they can or cannot do.

A user does not need to be in the moderator usergroup for this to work but it makes life easier if you want to give your moderators access to your private forum.

I actually have temp forums that members think up and I let them mod it. I dont want them to have access to my private forums so the system design works great.
