How to demote a mod

I have a few mods that I need to demote because they have not been active at all and there are new people that could take their place.

What do you say to the mod? How do you "break it to them"?

Short answer: Set their usergroup back to member

Thank them for the time they have spent in the past helping your community, tell them you have no hard feelings but you need to do what is best for the community. Hope they stick around and don't cause a lot unnecessary drama, but if they do, give them the boot

If you have a reason (not been active is the one i think you mentioned) they cant say its unfair.

Well, people can say or do whatever they want. The demoted mod will probably feel a bit embarrassed, betrayed, or even mad. When emotions are running high, people often do some crazy things.

Basically he's just looking for the best way to let someone go without stirring up a lot of drama.

Really, be as nice as possible. Explain why you are letting him go, and hope for the best.

If you have moderator guidelines, specifically point out in there what guidelines they were violating and the stated punishment for the inactivity in this case. I also agree that you need to be friendly in letting them know like the others said, but you also need to look professional.

Have you talked to them about why they're not as active?

Give them a warning a few weeks ahead of time... and if they don't pick of the activity, then demote them. But make sure they see it coming.

Definitely don't just spring it on them, make sure you give them a chance before doing anything drastic. Also you could let them know they are on a probation period of XX amount of days and if you don't see a difference then you will have no other choice but to demote them.

Meanwhile, bring on some new mods. Train them, and when you have let go of someone, you don't have to worry.

Thanks a bunch for the advice. I sent them this email:

Quote:
I noticed you haven't been around lately and was wondering if you are still interested in being a moderator. I understand people get busy with real life and can not have the time for forums and such and that is fine. However, I need people to be active on the forum to help it grow.

If you do not have the time I'd like to try to find someone else that has more of it to devote to the site. Nothing personal to you it's just that is what I need from the moderators.

Hope everything is well for you man. Get back to me as soon as you can.
