The Case of The Disappearing Mod

It was a cold January night in a rural Vermont town that knew how to keep its' secrets. Something besides the pellets of ice were blowing in the harsh winter wind - it was the secret of the disappearing Moderator. Not one week had passed since she was promoted to Moderator than she flew the coop without a trace. Now the only one who could help poor Toucan understand were the members of the elite task force of ADMIN FUSION. Collectively they could perhaps help him understand what action to take ...

should he demote her since his requests for contact have gone unanswered?

should he actively seek a replacement?

should he wait two weeks? three?

The befuddled Toucan seeks advice in ...

Shoot her an email asking what's going on and give her some time to reply. If the email is ignored or the reply isn't what you want to hear, just demote her and move on.

It's been a week with no reply, no activity on the board, no notice of going away - of course I am concerned she is OK - but I don't know how much longer to wait until seeking another Mod.

If she hasn't responded to any e-mails you have sent her, then yes, I think you should demote her. If she e-mails you back within, say, a few days after her demotion, explaining her situation, then you can always promote her again.

How many emails have you sent her? It took me two emails and then about a week of waiting in order to contact one of my administrators who had grown busy and hadn't visited in a while.

If you've sent her several, I'd wait a week, and then demote her.

Seems everyone has about the same timeline - multiple attempts and one week. I've been there. I think it's time to start looking for a new Mod ...

I'd give her maybe another week before you officially demote her just for the off-chance that she had a good reason for not being there and shows up in a week or so.

I also think you should wait another week before demoting her. You never know if she had some family emergency and e-mail and Internet are not her top priority right now. However, if your forum needs the attention of a moderator at this point, looking for another moderator wouldn't be all that bad. At least you won't have to worry when one takes a break like this if you have coverage.

Good luck and keep us posted. Great post by the way.

If you feel you have given enough chances/opportunities to let you know she is busy or something has come op. I think the best thing to do would be to start looking for another mod.
