It would take someone to literally prove beyond a doubt they were willing to help to give them administrator access. Moderators I pick and choose based off their activity and currently how well I know them

Someone who hasn't ever PM-ed me asking "can i be staff?".

In all seriousness though, I look for someone who truly cares about the community and its members. Dedication, being ready to learn, a willingness to help, and being able to 'speak softly, but carry a big stick' are the main things I look for.

I picked a mixture of personalities, interest, and views. We mostly get political and gaming discussion, so it was important to have a diverse group of moderators to balance things out.

The main thing was if they were active members, willing to help, and if they're articulate and fairly respected on the forums.

My forum is starting to become quite big and other people care about who is moderator. So what I base it on is how dedicated they are to the forum and how post and time to contribute to the board and of course if they're liked by most. I recommend you at least considering one of those options as being staff worthy.

I look for staff who is active and stuff, but I also look for staff who are willing and wanting to improve the site, not just be there for no good reason. Staff come and go, it all depends on their willingness to work.

Yes, I am at the point where I will be wanting to choose staff for my forum, but I'm having a hard time with it. How do you know if you can trust a stranger (even though they have been members for awhile, you've never met them) with something you've dedicated so much time to? It's almost like a child that you want to find the right babysitter for. How did the rest of you get over that initial fear? It would be nice to get a real-life friend to do it, but that isn't always feasible.

There was no fear for me...If I had the slightest feeling that the person might could not be trusted, they did not become a staff member. You only need to bring somebody on if you are 100% comfortable with that decision.

My "Grillpack of Friends" help "staff" my forum. These are the folks who help out the show the most and are the most computer literate. The only exception is my friend from India who is my biggest fan and would do anything to help out Good ole Grilldog, so when I'm traveling or busy, she looks after the forum for me. So Trust and computer ability and oh, undedicated admiration of me helps too... Really, I'm that vain!
