Interviewing to be mods

what types / recomendations do you have on interviewing members to be come staff? what should be asked?

Also is their anyway you can check their experience?

Also when they have become staff would you recomend carrying out reviews with them every so often?

- Usually age give it away, and country. (This way you can profile them: how much time can they spend on the internet)

- go to the forums they suggest, you can take a quick glance by searching the member. However it takes about a month after you hire them to figure that one out properly.

I don't do written review often. The only time my staff knows they are getting a review is if they are doing something bad or they request it for the next employer. Most of the time, i just give comments out for everything they do. Positive feedback prevent the same incident from happening.

Unless the staff position is one that is paid, I wouldn't worry about written reviews. They may be ok for personal records, though in written reviews usually indicate a raise with most businesses and companies (for the few that still do them).

As for interviewing, review previous posts they have made on various communities, check for quality, spelling and so forth. Check to see that they were indeed helpful and didn't step out of line.

If they pass your inspection, then the final promotion is up to you.

In addition to writing a minimum of a two-paragraph essay, I require them to answer 10 difficult multiple choice questions dealing with moderation. For instance, I incorporate my TOS into the question to see how well they know our TOS and what exactly to do during this situation:

A person is impersonating a member of our forum in e-mails, instant messaging programs, and on other websites. What actions should be taken?
a. Issue a formal warning, and suggest ban.
b. Verbally warn member.
c. Issue formal warning.
d. Suggest a ban.

Etc. If they get at least 8 out of 10 right, I will put them on a review queue where my other moderators will rate the quality of their essay and helpful posts throughout the forum. Approval ultimately goes to me.

I think "track record" (previous posts/actions/reputation/etc.) is enough to make a decision in most situations. If the person has no track record, then they really shouldn't be considered in the first place, because you just can't know somebody on the internet who you just met.

Hey

I definitely agree with Ryan, here. I would tend to forget worrying about written references and interviews. Consider the merits of each potential moderator based on their contribution to your forum.

This will always be a far more accurate measure as to their character and suitability for the role.
