If they do by chance have a good excuse for not being there for two weeks, I might consider having them back on staff, but they would have to start from the bottom and work their way back up because they need to earn my trust once again..
How do you word that so that it doesn't sound... bossy? I like to be a 'nice' admin, but i need to get 'bossy' with my mods...

Fortunately we do not have much of a problem with this here at AF, because all of our admins/mods run their own respective forums...So they never go disappearing into the dark. When they do start losing time, they always come by here and let us know.

Anywho, for those who are not as fortunate , I would recommend the same thing that many others are recommending in this thread. First PM, email, or call the staff member. Ask them where they've been lately, and let them know that they need to come back to keep their position. Give that a week, max. If nothing happens, send one last message...Give that one a couple days. If nothing happens, demote them to member status.

I really don't know Rizzo...when it comes to my boards and rules, I am pretty bossy with it only because when I first started out I was way too nice and got walked all over by them. Some times you just have to stand your ground with them. Now with other things concerning my staff and site, I am pretty nice and easy going, you just have to find that balance.

Do you have rules now for them? You might have to reinforce them at each meeting(if you have them). I have to do this at our monthly meeting and I have a thread stickied on the staff board that also reminds them of the rules. After a while they will pick up on it that you are serious and will start to follow the rules.

I have a similar situation my moderators are active but only seem to post like members and do not seem to do their share of helping with new topics. I have asked nicely to help out but usually get excuses like I am really busy. I really hate to demote them because they are a great asset to my forum but on the other hand they do not meet my expectations. I am not sure what to do with out hurting someones feelings. I have thought about looking for another moderator who has more time & can help more but I don't know should I give them a ultimatum or just add another moderator.Any advice?

My advice to you would be the same that I gave the original poster...While your situation isn't exactly the same, it is similar, and the solution is the same.

You have to communicate. If you are too afraid to do anything about this, then it's just going to keep happening...It's really up to you. Communicate your feelings. If nothing changes, then do something about it. These things don't just solve themselves.

When promoting a member to a moderation position, you must make it clear to them (through methods of communication) that they are responsible for whatever forums you delegate to them (whether it be a few, or all of them). You should also make it clear to them that IF they slack off (ie: make up excuses, goof off, not participate as much as they should, etc), they will be demoted.

IMO, when you promote someone to such a position, they shouldn't even have to be reminded of the responsibilities that they have, and the tasks in which they must fulfill, as a staff member.

How much should you expect of a mod? 1 new thread a week or what?

Personally I would expect maybe a new thread per day as well as their usual duties such as moderating and replying in threads, etc.

I've never had a demote a mod before. And if they do need to be away from the site for an extended period of time they always let me know. The only time I've gotten rid of someone was an admin that pretty much killed my site in June..
