Even if someone deletes all the files on your server, you should be able to get a site back on line within a short period of time. Assuming that full back ups of the database and all other relevant files have been copied to a secure place. Preferably your hard drive, and even to CD. There is no reason, ever, to find that your site has been permanently damaged.

I see no reason to give anyone access to your server/ hosting accounts, or your customer account with your domain registrar -unless they are full partners in an enterprise. If you need to give someone ftp access to a sites files, restrict them to the files or domain in question with a temporary password.

But when it comes to allowing someone SuperMod or sub-Administrative privileges on a forum; they will always have the opportunity to create a little mischief. As long as there is only one primary Administrator, that person is always in a position to reverse any damage done to his site.

I know someone who was locked out of his own vBulletin because he allowed someone else to install the Forum on the server and never thought to change the password when he took over the Admin account. Things went along smoothly for about a year. The guy got browned off at my friend for some reason, and accessed the primary Administrative account and changed the password which my friend had never reset after the other fellow installed the vBull...lol

That presented quite a problem.
But my friend simply uploaded a database back up which preceded the vandals change of password -and then the renegades account was deleted in its entirety.

People who do these sort of malicious things are usually not very intelligent and waste their efforts which such vandalism.

Bad luck dude..
I have heard of many such stories from friends but never really experienced it.
Have you tried contacting him via email or IM ever since? To ask for an explanation? And was his behavior odd in the previous few days.
If he is really sorry, he might be a very valuable member to your forum.

I have been referring to your ex-partner as a he, if it's a she, im sorry...

Yeah, well it is hard to decide, If you dont trust people you wont get anything done, but if you trust people then you have a chance of being screwed over, its always best to backup everything before you give access and alert your host to lock you out of everything else thats not needed to gain access to the /Root or host area.

Some people do mess around and ruin all your work, it then ruins and clouds your judgement on others who are genuine :/

As for the user just being deleted, try running a tool in maintenance, (if VB) you can rebuild lost/deleted threads/posts/users which is helpfull, but backup before!!!!

Oh, deletion of my particular saboteur's account was more than a precautionary measure. It was an exercise in pure, malicious delight. Why keep a troublemaker or his catalogue of posts?

The reason he had access to the cpanel was because he was the one that set everything up in the first place and actually knew how to do everything, I didn't. Before he came along we were running phpBB and were on a crap host. He moved us to a newer host, renewed the domain with a different company and got us vBulletin. He would never teach me anything, like installing mods/hacks, and would just do it all himself.

Me and him used to date as well and when that ended so did all the niceties. I've learned my lesson now tho. Those on my staff now I trust with my life.. And no one has the password to ftp or cpanel but me! haha

Honestly it's my belief only one person should have access to the database and FTP and everything. It's sooo much safer that way.
