That doesn't matter. I have two partners on my forum, yet I am still the only person who can access the FTP. It's not that I don't trust them, it's for a variety of reasons: if the case mentioned here happens, if their accounts get hacked, etc. etc. etc. One person should have FTP access unless it is a HUGE (and I mean THE top visited site for that niche) site, in which case some exceptions can be made.

That's a bold statement to make...

3 people have full FTP access here at AF, and 1 more has partial access, and there are no problems with that.

Sure, you shouldn't hand out FTP access left and right, but if you know who is getting access, and why they are getting it, there is no problem giving more than one person access...In fact, in many cases, it is a good idea. You don't have to have a humongous forum to warrant this.

No matter how big or how small your forums are, you are taking on a pretty big risk if only one person has FTP access. You also take on a risk if too many people (or the wrong people) have it, so you've got to find the right balance.

Why is it a risk to only have one person? It's never, in the 3.5-4 years of my forum's existence, been a problem. And I'm sure with AF here you KNOW these people or have known them long enough that you're sure they can be trusted. Most people are like, "Oh, you're admin now? Here, have FTP access." That's stupid. Also, a lot of people don't realize that even if they demote someone that they need to change the password so that person can't access it anymore and do harm.

What happens if you're on vacation and your forums go kaput? Or what if something like this happens and nobody has FTP to rescue your forums?

If only one person has FTP access, there is only *one* person who can do things such as restore backups, recover from hacks, and do general troubleshooting if need be. If something happens and that one person is not around, the forums are doomed until (and if) that person gets back.

Of course, I couldn't agree more...You should only give FTP access to people you trust 100%, but your comment below made it sound like under no circumstances should you ever give more than 1 person FTP access unless your forums are huge...and that's just not the best decision for many forums.

My host has access (no, I'm not hosted through a company). That's enough for me. And I know what I wrote, thanks, lol. And I stand by it. I don't like the idea of giving someone else FTP access unless you know them as well as yourself AND its necessary, and really the only thing I can see as necessary is having a large forum. If I were to go on vacation I would tell my host, and he'd keep an eye out for me FTP and database-wise.

I had a forum partner, and we had a disagreement and I left that forum.

And he got so insane he gave death threats to me, and spammed my IP and email over the net, telling everyone he could to hack all the forums I belonged too.

For two years he has followed me spammed my forum, tried to hack it, trolled me on other forums as well.

And he closed that forum we were partnered it out of spite, leaving angry members which he emailed them my details and said they need to have a go at me.

Out of all our members only two emailed me, the rest didn't follow tho.

I had to report him to the FBI over the number of death threats.

Even up to last week he tried to gain membership in my forum

And this is one fella I have never meet.

Yikes

That kind of stuff would make me think twice about ever running a forum again...either that, or never having a partner who I haven't met personally

How well did you know this guy before you brought him on board?

Well I didn't know him at all. It was his board, I joined as a member. Soon I was offered admin I accepted. The forum was slow and pretty dead. And I built it up and it was doing really well, when this all started.

And trust me I was scared wittless at first. But having alot of support from the military I opened Allied Forces forum. Then Sri rocks up with a merge suggestion with his forum.

As you can guess I was stressed. But I got my forum together we voted and joined Sri.

And really best move I ever made. I kept the old forum going just in case we needed it. But thankfully we don't.

It just goes to prove theres some good people out there. I have never met Sri either but I do trust him.
