Moderator witchunt.

Any of you guys have mods that will talk up an otherwise small problem into a big deal resulting in banning or severely pissing off a member?

Usually, a mod will bring up a post that could be interpreted as breaking the rules and after the rest of the mods give an opinion, the post is now the worst thing ever and a nasty PM or whatever gets sent and pisses off the member who bitches about it.... Then the mods act as if he is "throwing it in their face" and want to ban the member....

I am considering telling the guys that there is no more moderating by committee and that if they feel that they cannot make a decision on their own then they might wanna rethink being a mod.

While I do realize some situations (gray areas) require help from a supermod or Admin, deciding whether a picture posted or avatar is breaking the "no lewd" photos rule is not one of them.

I agree that a moderator needs to be able to make decisions and think on their own but I also think that discussing punishments among themselves when the situation is complicated is better than a moderator making a move that the others don't agree with.

Well to begin with; Moderators really shouldnt be being nasty in PMs when carrying out their duties... to me that just spells poor moderator team. Forgive me if im wrong, just an observation.

If i was you i would definetly consider employing some guidelines (or stricter ones if guidelines are already in place) on how your staff are to deal with their duties. Make sure your staff are respectfull, well mannered, and reasonably well punctuated - and always explain the reasoning behind anything; it should definetly help to alleviate some of the tension.

With concern to the way your moderators are going about decision making - i would suggest you promote independence. Have moderators make their own decisions - and simply report back to a mod forum detailing the violation, the action taken and why. If they feel they cant make a decision; obviously discuss it... but theres no need to be collectively jumping on your memberships back everytime somebody breaks the rules...

Woah... ive just realised my post kinda turned rant like... sorry! hope it was of some help anyways

No, your post was spot-on. I don't think I could've said it better.

It seems your moderators need to, forgive me, grow up, and stop being so timid.

Yes, I have had that. One time the mod and a member were in an arguement over hurricane Katrina. Well anyway he called her a bitch or something, so she wanted to ban him. I did not want to ban him as it was in our loose board and I do not believe in mods having so much more power than members. So anyway I lost 3/4th's my staff but kept the member and I feel to this day I did the right thing.

Definitely the right choice. Moderators are, like all staff, members themselves, with a few added responsibilities. Once they get to a general jaded feeling of "I R Holier than Thou," it's time to either re-adjust their train of thought, or relieve them as staff until they can get it together.
