| Lurker | I'm a co-admin on a once quite active forum. We got hacked and everything went downhill from there so another admin and myself want to basically run the website ourselves. The owner was going to college and didn't have any time to run the website. He gave me and the other admin FTP access to the forum but we wish to completely re-create the website. (bare with me, this is going somewhere lol) He has other websites in his public_html directory (which is why he can't just give FTP out to the whole site. he would be giving FTP to the other sites as well). I want to get cPanel access from him so I can move his sites out of public_html so he can give full FTP to the site... Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can convince him to do so? lol, a weird situation and i'm not sure how you can help but I am willing to try anything... :S |

| Lurker | That's not the case. If you point an addon domain to somewhere like /home/USERNAME/addons/ they will work. I confirmed it with my own addon domain and I asked my new host about it and they agreed. I have a domain pointed like that now. But it is due to expire soon. I only have it pointed there to show it is possible. GZero Interactive The name which it is under is removed of course (I included the path thing on the plain HTML page I added to it). I don't think I need advice anymore. He is going to purchase new hosting (I hope from the same host I just bought hosting from) and will be starting the website anew. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | you want him to give you full access to the server so you can move his sites out without him knowing?

He knows my intentions. I want to move his sites to a different area. They will all still work. They will just be in a different place. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | why not just get a new hosting company yourself and then have him change the name servers to the new hosting company and transfer ownership of the domain name, etc. would that work?

| Lurker | Because it's not a matter of ownership. He wouldn't give the website away, and frankly I don't want to own it (I don't think I could run it - I don't have the money to). I simply want the cPanel access to help with the website more. Currently it's a real pain in the butt. lol Owning the website would be great, but helping run the website is still very good. If it becomes quite active and popular then that can be a reference if I wish to become administrator on other websites. Yeah... |

![]() ![]() | Sounds a bit dodgey to me to be honest. If he knew of your intentions and agreed with you - he would give you CPanel Access to the site. What exactly is it that you need CPanel Access for anyway? And if your just moving the site to another location - thats a very simple and isnt time consuming at all. Get the Admin to do it.

| Lurker | Well, he just doesn't want anything to happen to his sites. It's understandable... The owner is both busy and isn't the most proficient in those areas (he doesn't know much of anything about coding, so he would have trouble doing these things, He could stuff something up [where as I wouldn't] ).Plus when changing the site around we will most likely need a MySQL database or two, which we would have to wait until the owner gets on and does it (which isn't very efficient). It's about moving the other sites out there to develop this one site further... We can't do it without either cPanel or a more active owner. |

![]() ![]() | Umm why dont you just utilise remote SQL and use FTP for the transfers? Its not difficult - and literally takes about 10 clicks at max to set up. Provide him with your IP and he can add you to the SQL allow list - youll then be able to use an SQL Client to access the database files without the need for CPanel access. Sounds to me though as if you are trying to force changes onto your site owner...
