That's a great idea.

I've recently set up a cafe press store with the site's logo on merchandise - I told the moderators to pick a t-shirt and badge or fridge magnet and let me know their addresses and t-shirt sizes) I think that it's a good idea as a thankyou for their hard work.

That's a good idea!

The only moderators that deserve to be paid are ones that are support staff for a hosting company or provides customer service for a product, things of that matter.

Not so sure about that theezy.

If forums are successful they're probably making the admin some money. Also if they're successful the moderators are doing a good job. Moderating busy forums can be very time consuming. Most mods enjoy it and would do it for free, but I can see a time when a forum is big enough that paying or the mods getting bonuses or benefits would be appropriate.

Saying that regular mods don't deserve paying is probably a bit harsh!

Its not really harsh. I dont think any of the moderators on my forums would even accept any form of payment from me if I tried to offer it to them. They know that they are extremely valued and appreciated. I dont have to bribe them to continue to moderate the forums efficiently.

If a forum is big and successful, the money from ads may go towards paying for hosting costs and renewing software licenses / domains, ect. Or perhaps additional add-on's to the site like (for example) a fancy paid chatroom software.

Although, this past Christmas I did buy all my staff members (who wanted one) a domain name each, so yeah bonus's are good and keep up morale.

That is very smart. That's an awesome way to get super-cheap tech support people for those hard-to-use FTA receivers.

I believe a mod should be trained appropriately, not just someone who is experienced within a forum. If they are trained and perform professionally, why not pay them?

I would incentivize the pay (or rewards) based upon forum growth and performance.

It depends on the vested interest involved with your moderator. My board is a paid board so at the point I need Mods. I expect to pay them with something. If you show people that you value them and care about them generally you will get better results for them. 18 years as a general Contractor there are allot of things I learned about how to treat people.

Thanks for the chance to post.
