if they are not good - get rid of them. nothing worse then a cancer in a forum that is trying to promote growth and community.

I have recently been in that situation but my mod wasn't paid. He was very eager and seemed very helpful on another forum but it was run by spam and was looking for a new forum so he found mine. He then saw my thread recruiting new mods (as one died and another got too busy with school and work .. Shay who is also a member here) so I accepted him. Once he had some power I don't know if it went to his head or what but he started talking on behalf of admins without talking to use first, creating new threads that already existed, and didn't know how to tell if spam was spam and instead of using normal methods of spam prevention, started telling everyone about a new thread he is making and that everyone can just post there is they see spam, and he started questioning the admins about how things are run suggesting "better ways" even though he didn't know even how the forum software worked. I know he was all eager so I tried to be understanding, feeling like maybe I Was being too harsh but then when members were having chat sessions discussing how he made them feel uncomfortable, I decided to let him go citing that he simply did not have the experience that we are looking for.

He took it well but I never had come across ever having to let anyone go before. I think as long as you have reasons and are professional about it and don't let your emotions get involved than it goes well.

If I am forced to terminate a staff member, I just demote them and explain why while allowing them to appeal it. I have yet to do this in all my years of being an admin.

I am careful who I hire though, lol.

jschneier will become famous soon enough
I always think you should warn first but never be afraid to fire. Better a little drama but higher quality mods.
