| Apprentice | Hire then Fire? I have had several moderators that I take up and then they fail to do their job properly. What do you do in such a case?..Do you remove them from their moderating position? Or do you leave them? |

| The Webmaster ![]() | Yeah I would definitely remove them if they are not living up to what you expect, and just tell them that they weren't working out. At a forum I moderate at, the forum owners almost never demote anyone (even after months of inactivity) and there are also several moderators who don't do their job properly, but it is near impossible to get anyone demoted.

| Apprentice ![]() | I look for laid-back active staff members who are calm and friendly but wont take crap from others. If my staff members can not perform these simple duties, then I demote them. I always give second chances though. If they have personal issues and need to take a break, I tell them I will demote them for now so the staff activity doesn't look inactive and then to talk to me about becoming staff again once they come back

![]() ![]() ![]() | If they are unwilling to help your community grow, then fire them. Ask them if they're willing to post, or actively communicate in your community - such as participate in everything that's going on and letting the users know that everything will be alright when times are right.

![]() | I think you should warn them for once or twice to remind them their duty and if they dont get it.. fire them |

![]() | Well there is a difference between not doing their job properly and not doing their job at all. If they stop doing their job, I'd ask what's up and ask them to re-assess their position as a moderator. It is best for them to resign (which is perfectly okay) than to maintain their position but not enact properly. If they stop doing things the way they should, I'd simply ask them to review the moderator procedures guide and let me know if they have any questions or need any help. In either case, if it became too extreme, they'd be let go faster than not.

![]() ![]() | First of all; have you given the users any sort of guide to what they should be doing, what you expect from them, information about procedures etc at all? If not then i would suggest that you can't expect somebody to do something if they don't fully understand what they have to do. I often find that a lot of Admins just assume that prospective Moderators know what is involved; when often they do not. Secondly; i would talk the problem over with them and ask if everything is okay - explaining clearly the situation and what you expect from them. Find out if anything is wrong and try to get to the bottom of why they haven't been doing their jobs; try to come to some sort of decision as how to move forward. Either the person steps down or they continue on. After this obviously you need to follow whatever process you have for monitoring staff performance and if necessary issuing warnings or demoting the Moderator from their position.

| Veteran | A warning first is usually good.. sometimes they have a good explanation for what went wrong...
