Wink Admin Do's & Don't

Let us compile a list of do's and don't for an admin of a board and perhaps in the long run, all of us can learn a thing or two. Who knows we may be surprised on what we preceived as acceptable is a big NO for others.

Here's my small compilation;

Do's
  • Be tactful in your post as what you post is generally how the site is being perceived.
  • Always remain calm
  • Be firm in your decision but always be open to criticism and feedback

Don't
  • Spam other boards to advertise your site
  • Use of profanity in public forums

Sometimes you may be faced with adressing problems on your board that you may not want to deal with.

Example: A member makes a post conscerning a topic that may not be suitable for your board due to the age of some of your members. As an admin you have to remind yourself that although you may have known this person for some time you have to remember that your looking out for the best intrest of your board and its members.

Often we are faced with these decisions and even though we may not want to handle it the way it needs to be handled we have to overlook those things that we often might not.

I disagree with the cussing one. Depending upon the circumstances, sometimes its appropriate to swear. And besides, many forums are tolerant of profanity. (Atleast the ones I visit usually are).

*Never act unprofessional. I know some forum admins that spam their forums with private convos they can do in PMs and such.
*Never make half-assed posts. Some admins make a post and completly forget to include the most important thing in it, a member brings it to their attention, and they don't care.

I agree. I don't care if one's using profanity nearly as much as if he's being dishonest, isn't backing up his points in a debate, and is being a troll or idiot unwilling to learn or adhere to the rules.

Many people think that a forum that has no restrictions on profanity and allows flaming is doomed to fail. Not necessarily. Readers, check out StarDestroyer.net's forum for an example of a thriving and very contributive community without said restrictions.

yep yep I agree with this... at least for my site and most that I visit, swearing is just part of the conversations. No big deal
