Invisionfree to SMF conversion

I'm considering converting my forum The Basement to SMF from Invisionfree. I know I'll have to pay to get the database dump, but from there, I'm clueless. Does anyone have any experience with converting Invisionfree forums? I'm pretty sure it's the same system as IPB 1.3, and I did spot a converter on the site.

I'm just talking it over with the community, this is all more or less research at this point, since I'm inexperienced with SMF. IF we do take this step, I will be in need of some co-admins who would be interested in sticking around and helping with conversion and such

I am clueless about converters. But if you are converting you will need a host i presume, if you havent got one already, check out my hosting company in my signature. (Sale is on, check the thread in advertising)

Also, when converting, i think IF has changed the code of theres somewhat from IPB, such as disabling of features, so some converters may not work unless its specifically designed. But like i say, i'm no expert.

If SMF offers a convertor for IPB 1.3 than you should be able to use that.

Yes, you just obviously have to get your database dump, but they all say it will convert with 1.3

That's the topic I first read that got me interested To be honest, I don't know where to go after I get this database dump. I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to databases and servers and hosting to be honest, since I've been living the ignorant life on Invisionfree and have never had to learn.

Can anybody tell me where to go from receiving this dump? And would anyone be interested in helping with all this, as a co-admin?

I can help you out, but its not hard at all.

First you need a host if you dont have one. From there, you get your Domain propogated to your host, and then install SMF.

After that, all you do is basically run the converter (other than filling in a few values, its all done through the script).

Do you have a host and the domain you need.

Host hasn't been looked into yet, I'm shoping around for it. I might be able to call in some favours with some people I know, but yeah

I'm also looking into this free service, which is similar to Invisionfree, but with SMF. I made a free board just to mess around and get familiar with the SMF setup, and I'm instantly interested in what they have to offer - http://thebasement.smfforfree2.com/ It all depends on weather or not I can transfer my domain name to be honest, we can break away from our database if need be. (We did it before) And besides, a clean slate might be nice.

As I said before, still shopping around. Any advice or opinions are more then welcome

Where did you get your url from?

If you bought it at godaddy, or anywhere else, you can easily keep the url, just have to propogate it (basically move it) to your host.

I have a host, but I'm not that happy with them.

Quite a few friends are on 1and1.com and love it, and its probably where I would go if I had the motivation to up and change hosts.

With the paid version, yes, easily, but this free option I'm testing, I don't see a place in the admin panel to set it up. It might not even need it, I don't know, it's just how it works on Invisionfree which is all I know
