How much link exchange is useful?

I'm a webmaster and newbie here.

Well, I'm trying to improve my Charleston Real Estate website. I know little bit about link exchange but it's not enough.

My question is how much link exchange is useful to improve our site ranking and how does it work?

I will appreciate your suggestions.

The more places you can put your link at the better this will help your traffic.
