Quick Reply

This is not a complaint, just curious.

It appears that this forum is not utilizing the ajax options available with vBulletin, most notabely in the "quick reply" option.

Just curious as to why, as I am interstingly enough considering removing it as well since it seems to have some issues loading on IE. At least on IE7.

I would just say that yes, we are using AJAX for the quick reply...but it appears to me as if everybody has covered that quite well

I believe what Mike might be referring to is why or why not have the Quick Reply activated by the Quick Reply button in a post. This is what the option explains in the admin panel's vBulletin Options | Message Posting and Editing Options:
Quote:
When Quick Reply is enabled, you may specify whether or not users must click the Quick Reply icon in order to start typing in the Quick Reply editor.

If you choose not to require a click, the system will not know to which post a user is replying, making both the threaded and hybrid display modes non-sensical.

We strongly recommend that you set the option to require a click if you use Quick Reply and have Threaded Mode available on your forums.
I usually go with the suggestions/recommendations unless I have some deeper knowledge of the option's purpose and function. In this case, I don't, so I have my Quick Reply only accessible when you click the button in a post.

I have machines with both IE6 and IE7 (as well as several other browsers) and have no troubles with the QR loading or being usable. I've experienced no issues with any Ajax features.

R'gards,

Jim

I'm not quite sure how you can read in to his post in that manner. What you are describing is no where near what he asked. I would be interested in knowing if that is infact what he is asking. If you got that one right then I'm going to have to call you a mind reader, because wow that was way off what was posted in the message.

Right, as we have said, all AJAX features are enabled at AF...including quick reply. What you are referring to, Jim, is not AJAX...and I personally have never liked forums that make me click a button just to enable quick reply - I think that's stupid and defeats the purpose of quick reply...if I'm going to click a button, I might as well go to the advanced reply...sure, a page needs to load...but in these days with growing broadband connections, that's almost a moot point.

I can see why the click is necessary. As it does bork the threaded and hybrid views, but does anyone use those?

Okay. I may have been confused about the AJAX features. I did say it is what I believed he might be referring to.

I'm not so sure it's all that stupid as there is prob'ly a few people who use threaded and hybrid views -- and some search engines actually point you in that direction often enough for me to think it's warranted (I've landed on numerous threaded view pages from Google). And clicking the Quick Reply button is a lot faster than waiting for the message editor page to load. In fact, it's almost immediate. Many of my members still use dialup, so how fast a page loads is important to me and I'm sure many other forum admins.

R'gards,

Jim
