| SMF by far. Many more features out of the box, and its much more stable and secure from hackers.

| SMF is growing fast now. Quite a few really good skin creators are working on them now. My site www.fbodyonline.com has a custom skin, m3talc0re does great skins. I've given up on phpBB after over a year of using it for my forums, too many problems, bots, and hackers for me to deal with with all the other things I have to worry about.

People see the php in the template files (in reality the vast majority of it is just simple echo statements) and automatically assume it's hard. In reality it's no worse than systems used by other boards and learning to skin it will help you with other php things too, whereas learning to skin other boards will help you only if you want to skin that software. In addition, I really couldn't live without server side read topic tracking and three click updates that don't involve having to download anything or mess with anything. Updated my board from SMF 1.1 to 1.1.1 today with 1000+ users online with no downtime and it took all of 4 seconds.

That is, of course, if you are looking for a feature-rich, easy to use piece of forum software. phpBB may be simple, but they are far behind, feature and development wise. If you want an example of poor development, I suggest that you check out phpBB3.Chris
