Help me choose BB script?

I am exploring an option of creating a car community as mentioned in other thread. To have a easy differentiation between "other" similar board, I am thinking of NOT using VB, though I have an extra lic.

Options I am considering are UBB 7.x (have lic.), punBB, UseBB

I have used AF. comparison feature, but I am more looking for member's opinions rather than feature comparison

which script would you use if you do NOT want to use VB?

MyBB is the closest thing to vBulletin if you are looking for something similar. Try checking it out at www.mybboard.com for more information. The script is very nice to be open source and is very well supported by the current developers.

If you are looking to pay for a script, I'd choose vBulletin over IPB or UBB, though.

I don't know a whole lot about UBB, punbb, or usebb... For paid solutions if you don't want to use vB (which is my favorite script) I'd recommend IPB.

Even though you said not to, I am still going to highly recommend vBulletin, which is my personal favorite. IPB is nice, but I just don't think that it can match vB, in terms of features and stability. All IMO, of course. If you were planning to go the free route, however, MyBB would probably be you're best bet, as it is the closest free piece of forum software to vB.

myBB is a good script, but has an issue with the mods. Right now I am waiting for them to upgrade the cash mod for the latest board release so that I can use it on a forum and curse the day I chose myBB instead of phpBB. In phpBB's case I never had to worry about not getting a hack I need. It's more work to install some features myBB comes with by default, but there are way more mods for people like me.

MyBB, as software, is actively developed, however they do not have a close-knit community like vBulletin when it comes to modifications and style releases.

IPB, iKonboard and phpBB are about the only actively developed softwares I know of in terms of styles/skins/themes and modifications and one is no longer free, the second isn't what it used to be and phpBB isn't always secure by any means.

MyBB currently holds my vote in the free category, vBulletin in the paid. The portal software I custom coded for vBulletin took literally and hour or so to convert to MyBB with the exact same functionality.

I'd say SMF, if I wasn't using SMF, I'd be using vB.

Another vote for SMF. It been perfect for me so far, no complaints here (aside from the fact that it's hell to theme, but that's probably my own fault because I can't code to save my life).

It's very flexible and if you know how to code you can make it look and act like any other software. Plus, it's free which is always a plus.

If you want something paid, then I'd go with IPB. I really love the user interface they have, even more so the VB. If I wasn't using SMF, I'd be using IPB. (alphabet soup much? LOL)

if you have a spare vb license then why not use it? if you don't want to use vb then try phpbb, it might have fewer features to begin with but hacks are easily available and on top of it, it has a wonderful and active community where all most all of your queries get answered in jiffy some thing i have found lacking in the smf community.
