IPB, vB or any other free forum software??

Yea, I know, tons of these threads has been made.

Anyways, me and a friend is starting a community, about poems and gfx.
Basicly artistic stuff.

We're currently on phpBB, but we haven't really started the community, still coding the website etc etc.

I'm just wondering what you guys think.
Personally I hate phpBB and SMF and those free.

I love vB, because of its use of AJAX.
I love IPB because of its Mods, such as Blog and Gallery.

So, what do you think?
Chance on purchasing an IPB or vB, or start with a free forum software?

Well, I'm not trying to advertise here, but since you don't like the other two main free forums, I'll suggest MyBB. If you want a smaller solution I suggest PunBB. If neither of those work for you, I suggest you try IPB and vB and buy a license for which one you like best. I'm pretty sure they offer testing services around somewhere.

Hope that helps

Mybb should have everything you need. It is better than some of the commercial forums too. I have it for one site and its awsome.

For a free solution I'd say MyBB is a good choice. But I definitely recommend vBulletin over any free script. And I personally like vB more than IPB.

Out of interest, why do you hate SMF?

I guess its just personal preference in looks and functionality. IPB has many of the same features that vBulletin does, I am just more comfortable with vB.

To compare them for yourself, check out our forum demo comparison system.

Yes, vBulletin for me- hands down. It just looks the best, and it's designed to be very user friendly. If you're looking for mods, there are many great sites, dedicated entirely to vBulletin hacks. If you'd like a demo, it's free. You can find it here. I wish you the best of luck in your selection.

Except it's not at all user-friendly. I had (and continue having) trouble finding certain areas on the default skin STILL, after using vBulletin on other forums for about a couple months now. IPB has a clean interface that gets its point across so much faster. Not to mention the text editor is no where near as complicated and clustered as vB's is. Clearly, it's not designed to be user-friendly, but aimed at more advanced, power-hungry users.
