Chat Software

I am currently looking for some chat software for my forum. Not a shoutbox type thing, where the user has to type a message and post it up, but more of an IRC type thing, although I dont want to get all my users to download IRC Clients either. Perhaps a Java based one would be suitable, but just something nice that the users can have a community chat in while they are posting in the forums. I think it would be much help to create a tighter, more stable community.

Anyone have any chat software/program ideas? (Free Programs Preferably, But any is fine.)

Jesse

You could use FlashChat - integrates with most forum scripts and is practically free ($5)

For web-based IRC, I would recommend both PJIRC (Java-based) and CGI:IRC.

PJIRC is highly customizable (as are most Java applets). CGI:IRC is written in Perl and is a good alternative for those who don't have Java or prefer something simpler.

Both will work on whatever IRC network you choose, and allow you the freedom and flexibility to customize things the way you want them.

Hey

If you can put up with the ads, Chat-Forum.com offer a free version of their stable and reliable Java based chat software.

I have been using a custom plan from them for years now and can heartily recommend their reliability and support.
