Mybb is OK, but lacks hacks. PhpBB has less features from the start, but you find hacks for virtually anything. And 98% of them work excellent.

What hacks are missing? I dunno thats why I ask.

I know as open source software mybb has more features than the paid software I am using on one of my forums. But maybe I am missing out on something? ha

Mybb seems to have pretty descent selection of mods.

I never tried phpBB but am dying to. I am thinking of setting up another forum and may give phpbb a try. I like trying various software out. It looks alright when I go to forums that use it.

Let's see .. there is no working cash mod at this time. This is the first that makes me have huge pains. I made a forum on mybb, but realized afterwards I don't have a cash system. There is a hack, but under development. It counts the "bucks", but nothing else. Can't donate, buy/sell, can't even modify from the admin panel ...

Between the choices, I'd probably go with phpBB, MyBB has almost been running at a security issue & fresh release once a month whereas phpBB has got it's act together recently despite there being a massive amount more people looking for issues with it.

Use phpbb especially if you want to convert to vb later, because vb has a 301 redirect script to direct people from older phpbb threads to new vb threads. While for mybb you would need to develop something like this yourself.

So keeping users up-to-date has become a bad thing now?

MyBB hasn't actually had a [security] update in over a month - Nor are there any reported or known vulnerabilities in 1.2.9.
