Oh the animosity

I disagree with the point that you must run vB if you are serious about your forums, but I do believe (or know?) that vB is the most powerful forum software out there today

I agree. You can be successful with any forum software as long as you do things correctly. vBulletin might give you a better shot at being successful with its huge user base, general knowledge and other things.

Spending money/not Spending money doesn't mean you aren't serious about a forum, or dedicated to it at all. It just means you might not need some features or don't have the money to invest.

I started liking mybb more each day. Had some bad times with the skining months ago, but now I can really throw in some good designs. The script is pretty nifty

Most of the forum users are familiar with vBulletin since it is used by many large forums and thus it is likely that they won’t need the same kind of hand holding that they would with different forum software. This is some thing I have experienced first hand while running my forum, which was previously using phpbb.

I like Mybb as I use it for a friends site I set up and maintain for her. It has more than some of the paid forums.

I have wowbb for my forum, but ha ha it ain't staying wowbb much longer.

My favorite forum software is phpBB. PhpBB is a high powered, fully scalable, and highly customizable Open Source bulletin board package (quote taken right from their web site). I found phpBB easy to install, stable and you can't argue with the price, it's free! There is a very active user community and it's easy to find add ons and customizations.
If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host : free forum hosting

vBulletin is my preferred paid software.
For free I'd have to say MyBB or SMF.

Vbulletin!! I run phpBB and vbulletin boards, and while there may be a few features or looks that I like about phpBB2, Vbulletin has more control and options to make my life easier. The plug in system alone is gold to me.

I have a demo board running with phpBB3 RC5, and though they added some nice features, I still feel like I'm fighting the software to do things.

vBulletin, of course! I'm also a fan of IPB, but overall, I feel that vB has a superior feature set, a fantastic interface, and an insane ACP.

vBulletin.

I don't like phpBB (not even their new version) nor do I like SMF or IPB. I haven't tried the other forum software because I haven't had reason to - I find that vBulletin does everything I want in terms of performance and features etc plus their customer service have never failed me to date. I especially love their plugin system and their ACP amongst other things.
