Would any of the members here mind chiming in from a different perspective -- namely, which software is best to mod? If you're a developer looking to create plugins and such, which forum software is most stable? I don't just mean "it works" but I also mean "has good hooks" and "has a good community" and "is coded well."

Any developers here fairly satisfied with the choice they made in forum software? Any developers switched because a particular group or codebase was so bad? Let me know. I'm looking to dip my toes into a new pool.

I'm no developer but from what I gather both vBulletin and phpbb both have very large and dedicated modding communities. In addition vBulletin has several paid mods so there is a market for that as well.

Good luck with the "new pool" search, aboyd.

Thanks! I'll take any luck I can, as I've not had much luck so far.

I actually think I might fork PunBB/FluxBB exactly the same as the FluxBB guys did, and then just keep it as a little project for myself. I've already rewritten the code with PHPDoc comments (so I could understand it) and given it a real templating system. I don't know, though. I'd rather be part of a community, but none seem to fit. I want friendly forums and project developers who are willing to put often-requested features into the core codebase. Most Open Source project developers want 99% of features to be in plugins. I'd probably only have 50% of features be plugins. I'd want the default install to do most of the things I need. This doesn't seem to leave a lot of projects for me.

Anyway, thanks for the well-wishes.

For me its MyBB. I just like the way they have everything setup. The only problem I have with it is that you can't use SMTP for email (I think the next version will support SMTP). I know some people have problems with this because their web host doesn't allow access to PHP mail.

Add me to the MYBB list. And yeah 1.4 ( due out by the weekend ) will have it.

Kinda suprised that adminfusion still has no MYBB section? Just about everywhere else has one. Not good especially considering the rise in popularity this great software is seing and for good reason. Why i have spent very little time here as well.

MyBB 1.4 is great!

It has lots of features and even has a system like the infraction system.

I have fought and converted software many times and every time I think I have found the best one. I have gone from phpBB, to SMF and tried MyBB as well as many others. However, now I am up to using vBulletin, and I really understand what the hype is about.

It is clean, easy and simple to use. Although it is paid, I think it is well worth the money paid.

Invision Power Board would be my preferred choice. Many mods and features. Just wish there was more integration with various CMS softwares. And a tagging system...

Why do you prefer it over vB?
