    I like phpbb3 or VB for a paid one. I did have wowbb but too many problems and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

    vBulletin is my favorite paid software; nothing can beat it in my opinion.

    For free software, I'd have to go with either MyBB or SMF. I've had some bad experiences with SMF when first entering the 'forum-world', but if I ever decide to move away from vBulletin (doubtful), I'm willing to give it a try.
