Hiding Who's Online from Guests

Does anybody here do this? I've heard of a couple reasons somebody might do this...the biggest reason is in case you really do not have much activity and you don't want your potential members to know this...I've also heard it is done for SEO purposes, but have never really seen an explanation.

Me, personally, I've always left this visible to all - I feel like my visitors would feel like I have something to hide otherwise.

This is true, but a lot of people like to look at how active forums are....afterall, even if there is a lot of content in your forums...if you only get 2 or 3 posters per day, there isnt much incentive to join

I don't look how many people are active, I look at how many posts are in the threads and how many threads there are in a forum.

The has been a case where a forum was too active for me! You don't really feel like you are in a community if all the threads have like 200 posts.

I dont look at how many people are online. Instead I look at how recent the posts were made.

A forum that is regularly updated with a fair amount of posts and threads is usually what I focus on.

personaly i dont think that is a good idea, as people might think that you are hiding it basically beause there is no one on the forum, so they might just think it is a waste of time signing up.

Right, but lately I've realized that the type of audience you have makes a huge difference. If you have a non-tech savvy audience, they arent going to know to look for activity/how many are online. If they can't see it, they wont notice anything is missing...thus they wont think you are trying to hide anything. If your audience is very familiar with forums, though - if they notice that they cant see how many members/guests are online, they could speculate that you are trying to hide something.
