Contests not working?

Hello everyone,
I'm the owner of Virtual pet list and we've been running a few contests on our community to try to spark more interest, and they're as followed:
Win your own virtual pet site - Post for great justice!, however; these contests seem to be doing nothin for us. It seems like the users don't care - and aren't willing to participate. What can we do to improve this?

I was thinking about launching a referral contest where the prize will be $150 to the top referrer, but if these contests don't help, then I won't.

What should I do?

I'm not extremely familiar with your site topic but are the prizes you think, as a fan of your topic, something you would want? Try to think in the user's perspective here. If not, then maybe you need to rethink what prizes you want (and can afford) to give away.

If they are, then maybe the problem is that you aren't advertising the contests enough. Maybe try to get some blog posts on related sites and submit your contests to social networking sites like digg.

Right...I really don't know anything about "virtual pets". Are the people in your forums actually webmasters or just average internet users? If they're not webmasters, a website is not going to be at all attractive to most of them.

You've already committed yourself to these contests now - You can't just cancel them out of the blue, because that may upset your members. Unfortunately, since I don't know much about virtual pets, I can't come up with any unique contest ideas...but if I were you, I'd try to come up with contests that dealt with virtual pets and not just posts, referrals, etc.

They're users of the virtual pet industry. Some want their own virtual pet site, so we thought we'd create a contest for them. I'm not planning to cancel it.

I held a contest at the beginning of august that was pretty successful I think. Basically it was a contest for the person who could make the most on-topic threads and I specified which forums the threads had to be started in. I run a blogging forum and as much as I wish I had shwag to give away, I didn't, so instead I gave away a free t-shirt that said "I'm Blogging this"

ThinkGeek :: I'm blogging this.

The t-shirt with shipping only cost me $20 so it wasn't a huge investment but everyone likes a free t-shirt. Thinkgeek has a ton of cool ideas.

ThinkGeek :: Mini Pet Cactus

do any of the virtual pet sites offer upgraded membeships or sell any items?

I just started trying to gain interest by doing contests.. Hang in there and keep pushing forward. I think after a few, they'll get into it.

Most of my members would rather sit and chat, I'm trying to insert activities and content that involve them. I recently ran a contest to name our newly installed chat rooms... I got some great suggestions but low participation. And my two winners opted to have their prize monies rolled back into site improvement. While I SO appreciate that, I also want them to feel like they contributed and have something that says they did, plus I want our other members to see contest winners receiving prizes and want to participate.

Posting contests won't do us much good, we have over half a million posts. *blank stare* My main goal now is to get EVERYBODY talking and participating.

Thanks for the ThinkGeek plug... I think I will get a few trinkets to give away!

Then maybe a couple upgraded memberships would be a great prize!

Great idea, I'm going to see what I can do. We have a merger on the way, so I'm waiting for that.
