Uniqueness = Stickyness?

Over at TalkWhatever we've got a couple things going on that I think are unique (or mostly unique).

Among these are the Book of The Month Club (this month the author is even joining in the conversation!) and the Scavenger Hunt.

I have just completed the BETA for a whole new feature that is pretty whiz-bang (a travel and dining guide complete with google maps in the threads) which I will open to the board members soon and I think holds potential to bring in and keep new users.

My question to you is this - does having features unique to your forum keep your users loyal?

My follow-up question is what are you doing that's different and cool?

Probably, because they will come back to use those unique features (if they are good ) what no one else has.

And for the other question... nothing. I havent thought of anything =\

Unique features rock!

If your forums don't currently have something unique, then you need to be thinking of something.

Here at AF, we've got PostFusion (among other things). It definitely keeps people coming back so that they can check their balances, subscriptions, etc.

I thought of Post Fusion as I was writing this thread. I think extending the software and creating useful tools or fun experiences is completely the key to survival and growth.

Ya, it needs to be extended a lot like it should show "one forum" per member with a drop-down list to show all the forums by the member. Could help the system be more organized, I'd say. Maybe even a post limit like 10 posts to use it.

I really meant that PostFusion was already an extension - not that I was recommending a change to PF.

I'm really curious to see what other folks are doing that are examples of UNIQUE forum-based ideas. Anyone besides Ryan at AF and myself have examples?

Of course unique forums have people who stay longer.

I can't really say that I have any FEATURES necessarily that make my forum unique; I think the real uniqueness comes from the members themselves. We have people around the world coming to Mercury and yet everyone gets along with ease. We have a highly accepting community, and that's not to say our members all have the same personalities. I think that's pretty unique.

However, we do try to keep things going every month with new activities. I also think we're unique in the sense we really ARE a general forum; we talk about anything and everything and don't really have a focus, and that works well, because peoples' interests change with time.

Thats great that you have members like that but honestly many forums are like that and I think some forum admin are too satisfied with having "unique" members and don't strive to actually have unique features (not talking about you personally). I was talking with a friend who has a forum and it was going through a slow period so i was trying to help him come up with some ideas for it. I told him he needed to think of something that his forum had that others don't and before he said it I knew the answer was "well we have a crazy bunch of members" or something like that. And even if that is the case, guests aren't going to see what kind of members you have, they're going to see what kind of features your forum has.
