Promoting on other forums?

How many of you guys have tried to promote your community on other forums - such as, having a signature linking to your forum - or asking the forum's members what everyone thinks about your community and what its lacking.

If you have, did it work out for you?

I usually put a link in my sig if the forum rules allow it. I haven't contacted other forums' members about my forum though. You have to be careful with that because if you're too aggressive a member might report you to the admin.

I do it quite often...That's been our #1 method of promotion here at AF, particularly early on, and it worked very well

I think if you're doing it on general forums or forums that relate to your forum but not directly (e.g. sports forum, but you have a forum for a specific sport) you shouldn't have any problems just putting a link in your sig. I wouldn't be messaging other members unless they are members you know a bit, I remember a post on digitalpoint where someone hired a guy to bring in members and the guy spammed a related board with pm's and posts and everyone came to forums to post hate.

You got to do it properly, you just can’t go to similar forums and start asking their members to join or review your forum out of the blue, because if you do that, you will not only be kicked out of that forum, you would also loose respect.

Put a link to your forum in your signature only if it is well within the guidelines of that forum and then try to be a contributing member.

I have a link to my forum on all the forum I visit,, it's very effective.

yea for a site like this it's VERY easy to promote on other forums.
