Competition - how much and how many

Right, I want to run a competiton on my forum for first person to reach x number of posts wins n dollars. The question is how many posts and how much money.

I was thinking $50 for 125 posts. First person to get there by posting decent posts wins. Is that too low or do you think I should increase the prize?

eek...posting contests, be very careful. More often than not, these are unsuccessful. Lots of forums have done this in the past and received very few benefits in return for it. You've got to have good rules in place to prevent spamming, and you need to have enough planning and promotion up front to make sure that it even brings in more members to your forums...Otherwise, you may find that the winning prize ends up going to a current member and only a handful participated.

As far as how many posts and how big of a prize, that really just depends on how much money you have to work with and how much you're willing to give away.

Like Ryan said thats a seriously bumpy road your wanting to go down. Though the rules would be rather easy for the most part to setup for you, I would never do it my self on my own site. It gets to a point about the specifics of the rules that would present the problem and most times those problems wouldn't show themselves until after the contest was started which there again that would be easy to take care of by a disclaimer in the rules stating that rules are subject to change at anytime during the contest at which point the contest may be restarted over upon the owners discretion. If your site has many members and little activity then your members would rather others find the content but still enjoy your site and all that would do is make them pull up youtube vids or news feeds. If your site has few members and little activity and low traffic then how would you advert that besides your site?

Theres too many variables to take into account. Realistically your goal would be to get new members to post but then would they stick around after the fact. Really depends on what its worth to you.

Eeek. Like above I would recommend strongly against this!!

Try coming up with a idea where all members can work together and productively. Or find something that all members can achieve (not something like the best forum design unless you are a website community) that doesn't involve spamming.
