Managing and Marketing a Contest

I am going to have a contest for one of my sites, that I know....

However I am running into mental road blocks when it comes to getting the word out that I am having a contest in the first place. What are the best ways? I don't have the social network pull to get it off the ground.

One way was that links back to the contest page would count as x number of entries into the contest but I figure that would take longer to get the word out. Is that an issue? Do long contests work better, say a 6 weeker?

Now for the management side, do I do updates? if so how often? As for the size of the prize I am going to look for sponsors with soft products, but sponsorship is something I am good at....

However if one of the ways that someone can enter the contest is by subscribing to my RSS how do I keep track of that, or should I limit that to subscribe by email.

As for using referrals for an entry should I stipulate that the new user have to max x number posts before the deadline to be accepted?

Any help would be appreciated, and if anyone is interested in sponsorship PM me, the forum is a general Canadian Forum and has content but is dead
