Out of interest, how many of these moderate their listings, and how many require click throughs to stay #1?

Both important factors IMO.

I personally think they are a scam.

I used to have my skate site listed at http://www.skatetop.com/index.php, weird thing was my site was busier that the #1 site yet the #1 site had 2000-3000 hits, made no sense. So, I did a whois and found out that the same guy owned both, all I was doing was helping him.

How are these things ran anyway?

-backlink required

had just under 500 unique hits last month, and looks like this month will be much more, and I haven't done any advertising yet, should get to that this summer

are there any other good Topsites anywhere ?

I'm going to give these a try for a few weeks.. I have some loyal member that will help get our listing to number one.. see if I can get any guest/members

Good and topsites are a contradiction. Ranks are always the result of spam, and there is usually little if any quality control. Focus your efforts on directories and general SEO. Perhaps even work towards making it into DMOZ (which is about the best strategic move a webmaster can make).
