What contests have worked with your community?

I am interested in hearing about which contests worked well for your community. Explain why you feel it worked, what the contest was, etc. If you have done contests that flopped, then please share those as well.

Well we are giving away a free cruise, but I'm not sure how effective it is yet. But I do have another idea for it..

I've just finalised my first 'prize' contest on forum junkies. We started to get alot of people designing their own sigs so i ran a valantine avature contest (avature = half avatar half sig 300x70)
We got quite a few entries, the poll was very active and i've had lots of positive feedback.
It's not on a 'grand' scale like the cruise but it helped the community spirit, especially as the other members are also trying to learn design and those that don't put requests in for avatures for those that can

I ran a 'Composition Competition' which generated stacks of interest, and many more entries than I had anticipated. I had an eminent panel of judges producing a shortlist of 5 from the entries submitted, and my membership then got to listen to each of these finalists as the pieces they composed were put up on my forum as Scorch files in an anonymous poll with hidden results.

I now own copyright on the winning piece and have a contract with a publisher who sells it, as I also do from my site... we even played the winning piece at an event last year and as it was so unique, it was recorded and now appears on a CD.

Cool eh..

I use something else except contests that really works.

I have a shop integrated in the forum, where people can buy several stuff(mostly advertisment packages for their sites) using their post credits.

Of course to make this work, you should have relative to your forum's topic products, and prices that wont make your members spam the forum.

I've tried a few contest, from getting articles to referals and such. Lately its been more as rewards for members. Been doing things like guess the date of the 100,000, or the 500,000 post, etc... I think its a good way to reward members.

I had a posting contest, whoever posted the most got an iPod. I shipped an iPod Shuffle to the winner at the end of Februrary, she likes it very much and still continues to post like crazy.

The latest contest is a referral contest, 1st place gets $75, 2nd place gets $25. That's not going as well as I had hoped...

I tried a contest and offered a Babies R Us gift certificate (my website is baby related), but the interest was very low.

I've done graphics and writing contests; I also have "parties" where we try to get the most users online (MUO) up as high as possible. It's worked pretty well.
