User Ranks and Reputation

I recently moved another forum from phpBB to vBulletin. I have User Titles enabled, but not User Ranks or User Reputation.

I'm not sure about enabling these features on a forum with a lot of political discussion. My forum members are extremely well-mannered, polite, and enlightened individuals. But it may not always be that way.

What do you think? What are the upsides and downsides to User Ranks and User Reputation?

I don't want to drive people away from the forum.

I can't see much of a problem about introducing user ranks. However I would be careful with user reputation, a lot of people abuse these systems and it takes a very mature community, such as this one, for it to be used correctly.

I agree with Big Brother, it takes a well established, mature community to use User Reputation properly, and it can, won't always, but it can turn a mature community into a community trying to get more and more Reputation.

Is that always a bad thing? Doesn't that keep the members coming back, if even just to fight?

Hehe, well you'll get Members you don't want. Plus, if Guests see this kind of fighting for Reputation, they won't want to be a part of it and so won't Register.

But if you think your Community could benefit from it, then by all means go ahead!

I think ranks based on posting are great, it encourages someone to post. Reputation, I'm kind of squeamish on, I put in the Thank You Hack instead, it allows people to say thanks and shows it publicly underneath the message and allows them to build thank you points up, nothing negative. Hopefully my moderators can take care of any jack a** users.

Not seen a forum runnng a thank you mod in a while. Always liked that mod, it's a nice touch when you see a list of people saying thank you for something someone has posted.

Caddyman has it on his forum, nextelforums.com

Besides, the rep mod can have the "no negative" feature enabled. This way, only positive reps will be allowed.

I have User Reputations enabled on my forum but I only allow positive comments, I have removed the negative option. It's used very little but it's there if the members feel they would like to give praise to the other members
