How to sell ad locations

I have a right column on my site where I would like to show my advertisers "banners", but I'm a little in doubt on how they should pay.

First I made the top-spot (1st location) as a $2.00 a day, then the ones below would be cheaper, like 1.50 or 1.00 etc ..

Right now the highest bidder gets the top spot, that means when the top spot is taken by one that pays $2.00 another one can just bid 2.10 then take over his ad spot and then fall down as the 2nd in the column. Hope you understand what I mean.

The question is whether this is a good idea or not ?

if it's this forum they're talking about http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/ , it has over 750,000 posts.

I dunno, I'm more of a fan of the traditional style of just listing all your ad spots and prices and having a rotation for the banner spots. But it could work out still.

We have recently tried a bidding system for our ads here at AF...it did work, but not very well. Charging a flat rate is not only easier, but it actually brought in more money for us. I think that using a bidding system is a unique idea, but it would really take a lot of experimenting to be worth it...There's probably a reason why most websites charge a flat rate for advertising...it's easy and it's proven to work.

$2 a day is expensive but for that forum, then its probably worth it.
i think a standard flat rate for the ad spaces would save you a bit of time and is easier to manage. I would prefer to use that then an auction.

Generally speaking, most communities/websites utilizing a bidding system are webmaster communities or blogs. The idea is unique and does work, as I've seen it work, though if the system isn't automated, it would be more of a hassle than anything.

If you have the publisher audience and that type of system gets the attention of advertisers, then by all means, try it out . If nothing more, you will have given it a chance and should it not work out, you can simply revert to the standard advertising methods.

thanks for your replies. I will test out and see what works best, but when I think of it perhaps a flat rate would be best for my kind of advertisers

I'm not sure, I didn't make it, it's just the promotional sig they have for us at Lucasforums. The CocaCola font would probably be pretty close if that's not what it is.
