Dropping out of school to pursue your web career

Have you guys ever met a high school drop out - that is a webmaster now and is making a lot of money online? If so, what is your take on this issue? Should webmasters in high school drop out and try to earn more out of their websites?

The owner of whateverlife.com is a prime example of this - she's 17 and a high school drop out. She's doing it big, but if her website crashes one day? She doesn't have any education backing her up then..

You don't need an education to get a job, there are plenty of jobs where you don't need to submit a CV, but fill in an application form answering questions and online forms etc.

I have never met a high school drop out, but bill gates & steve jobs are both univeristy or college drop outs, and look how they turned out

I'd never recommend dropping out of high school. You're still a kid. Just enjoy your time as one.

For me. My school life was sheer *beep*ing hell. The only reason I didn't drop out is cause my parents would have murdered me...

I haven't considered dropping out of college, but I have thought about how useless my degree will be if everything works out (I'm majoring in Information Systems). My goal is to be making a full-time income by the time I graduate and while I'm confident in that goal its nice to have a back-up plan for a real-world job.

But I would never have considered dropping out of high school. Those are some of the best years of your life, you should enjoy them while you can.

if i was making 70k a month, i would still finish HS, just cause it's fun...lol

and i would hope, if your making that loot and your site crashed, you would have put enough back to live for a good long while....if not, you deserve to be broke.

Right, nobody should be dropping out of high school. I just think that it's something that everybody should do. It helps to round your character...Plus, as others have mentioned, high school is some of the best days of your lives - why pass on them? If you drop out of high school, you can't exactly "go back" and do it again. High school only happens once. College is different. If you drop out of college or don't go early on, you can always go back and do it again...although, it will be a little different

I'm in my last year of college now. I'd love to be able to work on my own after college, but that would be a huge risk for me at this point in time. I've almost got my degree, and I already have an incredible job as soon as I graduate in May. The job is very stable, I like the company, and the pay is far higher than the average starting salary for my major. I'm only making a portion of this online, so it'd be crazy for me to pass on the offer and do my own thing.

Don't get me wrong, I will continue to work online, and one day I plan to be bringing in enough to get to the point where I can quit "traditional/real world jobs". Before I do that, though, I'm going to make sure that my online income is very stable. I'm also going to make sure that I have at least 2 years worth of my real world salary built up and saved before I leave that job (yes, I said 2 years). Sure, it'll take a while to meet all of those things, but things are too good and stable for me right now to take any huge leaps...If I never did manage to work myself online full time, then I'd still be very well off with my real world job...But, on the other hand, if I gave up this real world job and online income flopped, I would in a huge hole.

Well I did drop out of high school in my senior year, only because my Mother had cancer and was dying. I needed to take care of her. I got my GED right away and scored almost perfect on it I went to college for about a year then life took me another way. I got married, had kids and am now back in school pursuing Web Design and am quite good at it lol Each class I have averaged about a 97-99% for my grades and I have been running a site for almost 2 years and making good money on it so I consider that quite successful.

I personally would never tell someone to drop out of school to pursue web designing or anything like that. Education is very important and should on the top of the list.

For the woman that is running the site and is a drop out...more power to her! I just hope she is smart enough to save some of that money and hopefully get her GED with it.

if you can its best to stay in high school and at least finish that, at worst you could do both things at once, but i would try to maintain a job, or education UNTIL you have been successfull with the internet, there are way way more people that havent been successfull then ones that have...

i know people who make good $$ through the internet, and do it as a full time job, where as i do it more as a hobby. There is certainly money to be made, but also money to be lost. Its a big advantage in my mind if you have a job that you can do where you can get consistent income to supplement your internet income until you become a success.

having said all that if you dont take chances you will never be successfull...

I would never suggest dropping out either, School is well worth the time, you can be a "webmaster" after 3 pm for a few more years
