Good place to put ads?

I am currently running xanthom.com ad-free, which i don't mind getting nothing in re-turn apart from the community, as that is what i first set out to do, but it would be nice to try and earn what ever i can off the site.

I don't want the ads to be instrusive, and i don't want them to see the ads first thing, could you give me some tips on where i could put some ads, but without it looking messy.

My site is Xanthom Designs - Where Innovation Meets Design - also, with the forums aswell..

Anyone know any ad companies that pay well, that they are currently using, i have applied for adsense.

i would suggest to do something similar to what i am doing here.

i see your using myBB, i am sure theres a hack for mybb similar to "welcome headers" that are shown to visitors?

if so, check out my site and you see i have the cool welcome image that is mapped on the right and the adsense block on the left. if you show a ad like this and onlt to guests it IMO is 1 not intrusive cause your welcome image is drawing attention and 2 gets clicks on the ad

the coding isnt too hard, i am a newb coder and figured it out in a few hours. i stole some code from bamastanguys mustang site...lol

Yes, there is a plugin for this

The theme is fixed, i don't want to add a side bar to it, we might add a welcome box, but the welcome image would go straight across the middle of the board, there wouldn't be space for the ad there, without being intrusive.

And as i said, i don't want them to view the ad as soon as they go on the site/board - but i still want it in a good place so that it does actually bring something in.

i understand and in my experience theres not really a good place below the fold that gets a lot of clicks. best you can do is attempt to pretty up the placement above the fold is you want to get some revenue.

my sidebars almost never get clicked. the banner under first post doesnt really. the ad inside first post for guests does a little bit but thats more intrusive. and ad in the thread list used to get clicks.

and just to clarify registered members on my site see no ads (except auction ads, they like those...lol)

I don't want it to be to intrusive on the members, it can be a little intrusive to guests,

I'll have a little mess around when i get accepted for Adsense, and see what it looks like.

+Rep for your help

Hey no problem man, and this setup is 0 intrusive to member cause they never see it.

Members don't (or rarely ever) click ads. So it's better to smack the guests with the good placement, get clicks, and let them know "If you register these ads go away"

It's a win win IMO

you get clicks
you get registrations
your members aren't spammed

If you aren't going to go for Caddyman's idea I think a 768x90 ad under the navbar could perform pretty well. But I do think his placement is a great idea.

This is contradictory...You're basically saying that you want to make money, but you don't want your visitors to see the ads. In order to make money, you must make ads visible. Advertisers are not going to pay for ads that rarely get viewed, and CPC ads are not going to get clicked if they are hidden away.

There are all sorts of places to put ads. Look around at AF. We've got them all over the place - Some more visible than others.

Sorry, what i mean't to say is, i don't want them to be instructive to the members, i want them visible to the guests only.

Then implement them in the same manner that I have implemented them in my forum, one ad just below the welcome header and another one where forum listing/threads end. Put the ad in an if statement to ensure that the ads are only visible to guests.
