"Monetization"...?

Hey,

I'm a "Newb" to this forum monetization - as i always ran my sites ad-free, but it would be nice if the forum ran off the ads it served, instead of always out of my own pocket. Now i have an application pending for Google Adsense but that could take some time, and i heard the new changes they made to adbox had caused peoples "EPCM"'s or what ever the heck that is drop, which didn't sound good. So is Adsense worth using for us new timers?

I've heard some good things about Kontera - are they worth checking out?

(pros correct me if im wrong)

Stick with adsense. ECPM is the pay you get per 1000 impressions (page views). If someone ad blocks your ad that obviously doesnt count as a impression so your ecpm goes down.

I think Kontera is more geared toward very large sites that get lots of views and traffic. my site does way better with adsense then kontera and i did try kontera....

Ah thanks for clearing the ECPM - i know what it means now

I don't know if Kontera is geard towards large sites, so i'll see what other members say that have tried it.

What was your earnings with Kontera when you did try it? how long did you try it? and how much was it behind your Adsense earnings?

If you want an ad system that isn’t intrusive then adsense is the way to go, kontera is a bit too intrusive.

My ECPM as well as CTR has gone down this month and I am going to be earning almost 20-25% less than what I earned last month and this is despite the fact that my traffic has gone up by 20%!

Best option (if your niche supports it) is affiliate ads from CJ etc. they pay the highest, though you might not get to see a single cent if those clicking on ads don’t make a purchase.

Another thing you can try is private banner sale; however that would mean that you would have to search for advertisers who are interested in your site. But in the long run this can prove to be the best option.

Affilate ads from CJ wouldn't be the best move for me at the moment, because we have been advertising alot on x10hosting.com - there are alot of graphic designers there, and we brought them over to Xanthom, and they're ever hosting for free of x10hosting, or for free on my server. So i don't think they would make a purchase on anything them ads displayed.

I will be trying to implement private banner sale when we get alot more bigger, we've only been open about nearly a month and a half and don't really have much traffic stats to display, we've had over 3k unique hits since the start.

Ouch, this would really affect my forum then, as mine isn't even as half as big as yours yet!

I think Adsense is a good way to start. I also thought Adbrite was good. Kontera never performed well on my forum but I could see it being profitable on larger forums.

Like BCM said, try private banner sales first. they are good. and if you want, Text-Link-Ads is a steady easy un intrusive income too.

I did try text-link-ads.com - i think thats the domain, but it said something about i had to little traffic, this was because i switched servers 4 days ago.

Another question Adsense Related, do they have to click the ads in order for you receive cash, do impressions make you money also?

Sometimes CPM banners display on adsense but very rarely. And unless you have a lot of traffic it doesn't matter anyways. For example I remember checking my adsense when I had no clicks but $0.01 earnings.
