Contacting larger companies

Has anyone gone about contacting companies to advertise on your site? If so how did you go about it?

My forum is hosting a camping rally in March. I have been calling, visiting every camping RV supplier, dealer in the area. Every one I have talked to agreed to either advertise on the site for a fee or gave a donation for a raffle that we are planning during the rally. I say it never hurts to ask so call them or talk to them in person if you can.

I've contacted some big companies in the past, but most of them do not even bother to reply.

We contacted a few of the bigger companies for my claims site. We got 3 of the 4 major software companies to advertise for our field. One of them offered free software for learning purposes to all members of our site (software is typically around $100/mo if you purchase yearly license and we have quite a bit of members)
