I would agree that especially for smaller forums, private advertising with banners and text links will generally bring in more money than adsense.

I think in every case private ads will make more money, although google is a lot easier because you don't have to deal with real people, real people are always so damn slow. On our big site Lafs had been using google but a few months back we made the switch to private advertisers and we make atleast 50% more each month with direct sales to online dealers for FTA products but it can be a big hassle sometimes.
