TopSites & Forum Directories, do they work?

I've been submitting my site to DOZENS of Forum Directories all over the web and I've also been submitting my site to a lot of "TopSites" (eg: see this one).

Its only been a few weeks and I don't see any drastic increase in the traffic, although my site's traffic has steadily increased and is now about 1300+ unique visitors a month.

SO do you submit your site to TopSites/Forum Directories? Have they worked?

Directorys are a good way to boost your backlinks and pr, when whichbb opened i spent around 9 hours submitting it to loads of directorys...some of the bigger ones have given us quite a few links in.

As for toplists, its not the best way to grab members. Usualy people dont goto a toplist to find a good website, they goto their prefered search engine.

Many topsites also disable spiders from following the URLS so it ends up being extreamly unlikely that you will be getting more visitors from the toplist than you are sending to them.

We get around 35% of our monthly traffic from the directorys that i submitted to (According To Google Analytics).

I have my site listed on several top sites, but maybe a half dozen of my members found us that way. Our member base is mostly from word of mouth and being members at places that let me have my site url in my siggy.

Yes, me too.. Word of mouth, signature links in other forums are 99% of the members, hardly any from search engines.

This is also understandable I guess, because new sites won't show in the top few pages of any search engine and it takes time.

If you have time, I do think that you should submit your forum to search directories, but they only help SEO; in other words, search directories including forum directories themselves do not bring much traffic.
