This is getting crazy! Spammers go away!!

I am getting really fed up with spammers. Can we just light a fire under them and watch them burn or something?

What are you doing to stop them? I just added a new profile field required at registration. A text input box that asks "Are you a spammer" and the answer has to have "spam" somewhere in it. I don't know if it will work, but I'm at the end of my rope on what to do.

I've also changed it to admins have to approve all members. Thats going to be a pain in the butt, but what else can you do?

I got attacked quite often from spammers and hackers, like there working together. What i did is first of all ban there IP's. let the member know there is spammers on the forum and tell them not to over react when they see the spam. Also, you could try hiring temporary mods to help delete the spam and ban them.

that aprove new registrations is a must, i did it and it works very well. like customs at an airport hehe.

well I am getting sick of them too. But little by little I succeeded in closing some of their doors, so I am not that targeted anymore. I do tend to have some "real" spammers that join to plug in their sites without having the needed post count to post in the market place. Well, this is why we have the mod team

It seems just in the last couple weeks they have been everywhere. It is so annoying!

I see I'm not the only one who's been attacked...

I had about 12 spammers to sign up in the last week. It is annoying. I already have a required registration field called "How did you find out about the site." The spammers must have some type of program or something because they override it and register without answering the question.

A regular user wouldn't know how to override the question.

CAPTCHA image verification and email verifications usually block out all spammers. You might have to block an IP occasionally though.

yes visual identification and email validation are essential, admin approval is ultimately the best way to do it but it's a nuisance if you get a lot of registrations.

Another way I have used is to make it so when a person registers they are a 'Trial or probationary member' so for about a week they have limited posting rights e.g. no access to main boards until you put them in a 'Full member' group where they can post in them once they have posted acceptable posts.

My "are you a spammer" question has worked so far. The last few registrations I've had have had "USA" in the answer, so we knew right away that it was a bot. Banned before they had a chance to post!
