Limit edit time

Do any of you have a limit on how long your users have to edit their posts? How long(or short) is it? Whats your reason for (or for not) having the time limit?

I've seen a few forums in the past that do that, personally it drives me insane. I wouldn't do that to my members but perhaps its more of a content related decision.

I usually do something like users can always edit their posts but after 2 or 3 minutes it shows the "last edited by..." at the bottom.

I've seen this on a few forums and for some reason I don't like it. I really wouldn't do it unless it was for a contest where their posts had to stay unedited. In that case I'd probably just create a separate forum where regular users can't edit posts ever.

Only do this for members under 100 posts, then they get all sorts of new features. its just so incase they're just come to wreck the place or something by tricking me with good posts the editing them later on, i dunno. safety precaution.

I have limits in some of my forums. Already had problems with some stupid members who just wouldn't understand how a forum works. If they saw they can't delete a thread, they started editing posts with n/a so that they "delete" their content on the forum. Yeah, I have such people too, who ask to have their posts deleted when they don't want to be in the forums and when they are redirected to the rules and see we stated we don't so this they tried to mess it by themselves. They have 15 minutes edit time for correcting typos. All other changes have to be made by myself. That also excludes the possibility of them getting into flame wars and then editing messages so that I don't see the crap posted. In some communities you really need to put some restrictions

This drives me insane on other forums personally. However, I give users five minutes to edit before the "Edited by xxx on date yyy" appears if they spot a typo, then the message comes up.

I believe that members should have the ability to edit their posts at anytime. Plus, it doesn't annoy me.

Ours is set to 10 days here at AF. The reason is the same one that dojo gave. Yes, we have actually had a problem with this in the past...somebody gets upset for whatever reason and is out to get AF. Since they cannot delete their posts, they go back and edit them...removing all of the content and replacing it with something like "..."

The only way to prevent this is to set a limit on when they are allowed to edit their own posts.
