The Members That Go *Poof*

Yesterday while looking through the memberlist for a user I came across a few users that I hadn't seen in a while. I was really curious to know what happened to these certain members. The more I explored the more I found members that had been so dedicated to the site just one day go *poof*. Now these members didn't leave because they were tired, or because there was a fight, or anything- I'm pretty sure of it. Since in the past I have always been able to track down members eventually that went to other places, or sometimes certain members will gradually leave but still be online. However these members were literally on one day, and gone the next. I didn't realize it till a while after how many people I hadn't seen in so long. I have all their screenames on my list and they havn't been online forever, I've tried contacting them by email no reply, sometimes the email has expired, I've tried asking their friends no reply either. These members have literally dissapeared off the face of the earth!

Some of these members were great members and even better friends and I definetly wonder. Where did they go? What happened to them? Have you had any members like this that are just gone one day and never come back? Tell your stories!

It happens with forums. I suggest that you send out monthly newsletters to remind users about your forum. Contests tend to get old members back too.

That has happened to me as well, as htmlmaster said, contests usually bring them back and get them interested again.

Try to keep fresh content on your forum to, they could have became 'over' your forum because of that. But its more of a mystery to why this happens, i was unsure too.

I would have thought members would gradually stop posting, not suddenly go "poof" and dissapear?

Sometimes it happens, i noticed it on my forum a few members did it. Some gradually stopped posting but some just stopped and never came back. I even saw what forum one of the members started posting at.

I've only had 2 or 3 so far go 'poof', but it was due to personal reasons, and all have come back after i emailed them and asked how they were doing.

I do a regular PM to every single member, those who have posted regularly i say thanks for being such a great member, those that haven't ask if i can help in some way.

We actually had an ADMIN go "poof"! There were 4 of us at the beginning...yeah, I know we dont need 4 admin, but when we started we had no idea. Anyway, one had personal problems & we knew she was leaving. The other one just disappeared. We actually were IMing with her earlier in the day. She said she'd be back in an hour & we haven't seen her since. She was a member of other forums we go to & as far as we can find out, no one has seen hide nor hair of her. This was 8 months ago & we still wonder what happened to her. Its kind of scary, actually.

We had a member here at AF go poof. His s/n is Anon. He had a new forum that I was a part of... and one day to the next, his board was gone, his domain 404, and hasn't come back to AF at all. He hasn't answered his emails, or his PM's.

You might think that maybe he was in an accident, but why would his website be permanently 404?

I can get like that. Especially during basketball season, I'll be too busy with homework, school and basketball practices/games that I wont have time to come online.

Maybe there was some legal trouble and he got sent to jail? Kinda far fetched but I have heard of that happening.
