Changing usernames

Do you think its right or not good that members can change their username by free will?

I might do this to my forum, as there will be loads of "teenagers" at the music forums, but I was also wondering would the adults like this?

I find the younger members want to change their name very frequently. Ussually when you've been around a forum long enough, you find one you like and stick with it.

At their own free will though? That can get VERY confusing

I also find that the younger members tend to change usernames more often. I used to allow members to change their username at will, but it gets to be a little annoying after a while.

If a member wants their username changed, all they need to do is simply let me know via PM or an e-mail.

If a user wants a name change they have to request an admin. I would never think of letting them change it themselves.

If you're using IPB 2.1 consider enabling the display name feature, but generally usernames shouldn't get changed unless it's needed

I don't allow users to change it themselves. I do own auto forums though, and many members will choose their original username based on their car. I know that people switch cars, so if someone PM's or gets ahold of me, I will usually change it if there is a logical reason for the change. Not just because they've gotten bored with it.

I think that members should be allowed to, but they must contact an admin to get it done. This stops them abusing it, and also they will be less likely to want to change their usernames frequently.

I also don't see a problem with members requesting to have their usernames changed. One forum I admin at modifies the custom user title of anyone that does this to include the text Formerly <former username> for approximately one month. That helps to get rid of confusion when others see some new name with tons of posts show up all of a sudden.
